My kids are obsessed with Mary Poppins. Well, I guess we all are! After watching it for the 2,352nd time lately, the idea of a quilt with kites on it popped into my head. Let’s Go Fly A Kite, and send it soaring!
Just a few days later, I saw that Riley Blake had a new fabric line called “Fly A Kite” (designed by October Afternoon) and I was so excited! As soon as my LQS, ETC, got it in I raced down and grabbed some fat quarters and yardage. Spring time is approaching, and kite-flying days are coming soon!
I arranged the kites (which are made up of half-square triangles and half-rectangle blocks) in staggered rows, which was Mike’s idea.
This fabric line is sooo playful. Little girls on swings, boys flying kites, flowers, geometrics, stripes… and the colors are beautiful. They play more into the shabby look, I think, since the whites are more creamy and the colors a little more subdued.
And of course, you can’t leave a blue sky full of kites without a cute red binding, can you??
The back is just a print of little kids at play. There’s a little dog in there, too! I pieced the back to get it all to fit!
The quilt is a good throw size, and measures at 56”x64”.
I hope this quilt does the fabric justice. I had a difficult time getting a perfect picture, but I’m loving how it turned out.
This one is not staying here to keep us warm. I’m hoping it finds a good home, and I’m putting it in my Etsy shop. It will be lonely in there, since it is the only thing in there…

Mel, it looks AWESOME!! It won't be in your shop for long :)
ReplyDeleteI love that line, but I really love how you used it! Kites are so summery!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love this quilt! The fabric is perfect for the design. I'm sure it will be off to a happy home soon!

A very happy marriage of fabric and pattern :o)
ReplyDeleteI love that fabric! I have some of the main print and one of the coordinates but haven't decided what to do with them yet... It's so pretty and you've really done it justice :)
ReplyDeleteGreat minds think alike! And have great taste in fabric...lol. I just made a dress from this fabric! Love the adorable quilt too...would love to see how you put the kites together!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is fantastic! It shows off the fabric and the color you chose for the background is perfect, it looks like sky :) I love that fabric line. My favorite print is the one you chose for the back and the red binding is great! Your husband was smart to stagger the kites. Riley Blake couldn't have done a better job designing this pattern :)
ReplyDeleteReally great idea - I love this quilt!
ReplyDeleteThis is fab. I've pinned it, hope that's ok (I have mentioned that you are selling it!). Just let me know if you'd rather I removed the pin
