I made my oldest a twirly skirt out of some knit I got at Hobby Lobby a few months ago- she really wanted to have a Strawberry Shortcake outfit and hey, the knit was perfect with the pink and little green dots.
Unfortunately, it was really cheap knit.
After pre-washing the fabric (I knew it would shrink; it was cotton, after all) I cut it out and sewed in the waistband. After the first wash after it was worn, there was some serious wonkage going on, so I re-cut the skirt part. It made it a little shorter, but I had made it long to begin with so it wasn’t a big deal.
10 washes later, it looks like this again. The waistband is now 2” too wide, too, so even though it is shorter, it sags a lot and I usually end up tucking the skirt into her underpants to get it to stay on.
After this last wash and her wearing it this morning… it was time to just toss it. Cheap knit = wonky skirt. It is just the way it is. Too bad, because I was hoping this would last until October and Halloween’s Strawberry Shortcake costume.
Moral of the story: Buy nicer knits.
The end.

I've had the same experience with cheap knits (and some cheap cotton fabrics). Can it be rescued with a 2 inch elastic waistband, at least for dress up sake?

Crap. I just had my first go with knits (I made the racerback dress in prudent baby). I liked the way it came out, but I didn't prewash it. Now I'm worried because I bought the stuff from Hobby Lobby too. Oh well, I guess I'm only out 3 bucks ...
ReplyDeleteHow can you tell the difference btwn good knits and cheap knits? Obviously the price but even then what is a good price point for knits. I've looked at some knits online from Mood and they were about $7 /yd...
ReplyDeleteHow do you know how a knit is going to lay if you purchase online?
