I have a new favorite top.
I love the light, loose, and grown-up look of chiffon, crepe, lace, and all other fabrics in that category. I think all of my date-night/out on the town tops are one type of another or a combination of them all, and have been that way since high school. Now these types of blouses are everywhere, but so many are just too short. And I’m poor. That’s when I turn to my little collection of women’s patterns!
For this one, I used McCall’s 5977, but added 3” to the center in order to have room for pleats, and drew up some cap sleeves (which ended up fitting all the way around the arm, obviously I’m not expert at that) to attach to the bodice. I also added the bias binding to the bottom hem instead of doing a regular hem.
Can I tell you how much I love it? I wore it around at night while doing dishes at 11:30pm and it wasn’t even done- I already loved it that much.
In the morning I finished the pleats (at first, I had the pleats end at the bust line, but it was looking a bit like a maternity top, and I don’t want to send any mixed messages to people ha ha) and added the bias hem. I put it on, and didn’t take it off. Even when the baby barfed all over it. It even got blood on it already, but I just soaked the spot in cold water- while it was on- and got it out. When Mike got home with the car, I put on some pearls and took my blue blouse out on the town (aka to Target) and felt so pretty! And thanks to Kirsten for taking the photos, I knew my 3-year-old wouldn’t do justice with the camera ;)
Since I am sure someone will ask, I got the fabric from Jo Ann’s on my Birthday, (it is a sheer crepe-type, and isn’t silky smooth- when you rub it together it kind of makes a sandpaper sound… which is a terrible description, but I adore this type of material) so I guess this is a new birthday shirt? Anyway, I LOVE this top. LOVE. The pattern is a great fit across the shoulders and neckline- and it doesn’t need a zipper or button or anything like that, so I am a huge fan. It is super versatile. The darts are really easy, not that I need ‘em now that my milk supply is G-O-N-E and my sistahs are non-existent again. But I digress. The pleats look wonky in this photo, but they are nearly perfect in real life.
I’m so thrilled with it! Everyone, be thrilled with me!! Ready? Go!
YAAYYY!
;)
Have a good day!

really cute!! looks great on you, I love that kind of fabric, too. I think it makes the best blouses!
ReplyDeleteWow! I LOVE it! Any chance you hire out? :) And I wear white after Labor Day too!
ReplyDeleteBeautful !!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful blouse and pictures! I really like the pleats all the way down (and thanks for figuring out for me not to stop them higher ha ;0 ) and your sleeves. I like sleeves that are complete sleeves better than the cap sleeves that just cover my shoulders.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your oh so cute polka dot top! The color is so pretty and she light weight fabric and design is so feminine. I don't blame you for wanting to wear it every day of the week! :)
ReplyDeleteSO gorgeous! I just can't get over it. I want one too. It would look so cute with fancy black pants and heels too. Or a cardigan? LOVE!
ReplyDeleteOoh, I LOVE it! Throw a braided metallic belt around it and it'll be amazing. One word: Dollar Day at Goodwill! I'll even come with you if you want. :)
ReplyDeleteOk, so that was way more than one word. I have a problem. I talk too much. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is adorable! I'm always hesitant to make shirts or blouses because they seem like they'll take way more work than a simple skirt. I think I just need to get up the guts and go for it.
ReplyDeleteI am excited for you. That is adorable. I could see myself wearing that until 11 as well. In fact why don't you lend it to me and I could manage to be even more excited about it. I would take it blood and all.
ReplyDeleteYou are adorable, and I want that shirt!
ReplyDeleteSuper cute! Love the fabric you used!

This is really adorable, Melanie! The color, the fit, everything!
ReplyDeleteLove it. Thanks for the inspiration! (And I have the same problem too when I stop nursing. In fact, there are some shirts I can't wear right now because the milk supply makes them too tight. I'll miss that when we wean. :)
ReplyDeleteI love the shirt and great thinking on the pleats. I would never have looked at that pattern cover and bought it. Those ruffles would be too much for me but the pleats look great. ~Major Moma
