Family Night Board

Family Home Evening Board

In our church, we are counseled to set apart one night a week for a family home evening where there is extra focus on family unity and building testimonies.  In our little family, we’ve finally reached a stage where kids fight over which assignment they want that evening :)

Mike asked me if I could make a FHE (Family Home Evening) board where the assignments can be visible to the girls so they would know beforehand what they were going to do that night, and I wanted to make sure the assignments were easily rotatable, with magnets.

I began with a cull piece of wood and a 12x12 piece of sheet metal, both from Home Depot.  I always check the cull bin when I go there, sometimes I find great pieces of wood, and they are only 51 cents a piece!

Using my Silhouette software, I used a chevron pattern as my base and stretched and sliced it until it resembled herringbone.  Then, I cut it out onto some vinyl to make a stencil for the wood.  After painting my white basecoat, I put on the vinyl around the board where the sheet metal wouldn’t be covering it. (Note: When putting on the herringbone, either design it perfectly so you can cut it all in one piece- not doable on my Silhouette SD- or adhere them in columns, one by one, so you can get the spacing perfect.  Or it will be imperfect, like mine)

Herringbone Vinyl

This pattern would be really easy using rulers as a guide instead of a stencil, btw.

FHE Board Herringbone painting

Once the stencil is on, take a second color of paint and paint right over the stenciled part.  I dabbed my brush first, then gently smoothed the paint out.

When it is all dry, peel off the stencil pieces, and this is what you’ll end up with:

FHE Board Herringbone

When it was pretty much dry, I just glued the sheet metal to the board using a Hot Glue gun.  Silly me, the cold metal hardened the glue seconds after it touched the metal.  So, put the glue on the wood, not the metal!

FHE Board name blocks

Next, I got the name letters ready.  I found these wooden rectangles at Hobby Lobby.  I painted them the same gray as the herringbone, then cut paper to fit.  A little mod-podge later, and they were ready for name assignments.

FHE Board with magnets

I picked up some ceramic magnets at Home Depot in the same trip that I got everything else, and I simply glued those to the back of the wood name pieces.

FHE Board vinyl transfer

I used my Silhouette to cut out our names, and to cut out the labels for the assignments.  It was tricky getting them all on right…

FHE Board with baby

And here’s why… sometimes I craft on a messy counter (for the record, 99% of the mess was from this project- it was spotless before I started! Oh, can you see our alphabet bean bags on the floor in the other room? Those are played with on a daily basis.) holding a naked baby because she’s spit up on all her clothes and I need to finish my craft before I start laundry.  Keeping it real, people.

Anyway, after getting everything on where I wanted it, I was done!

FHE Board finish

Too bad our weekly FHE for this week has passed. Next week! And if you ever wondered what my kids’ names were… there ya go.

And, yes, I know “treat” is missing :)  That was totally on purpose.  Mike was disappointed, too!  hee hee. Our only problem now is figuring out where to put the board so we can see it and use it.

I was thinking how this would work with chores too, not just FHE.  They have lots of fun sheet metal pieces that are longer at Home Depot.  There are so many things you can do with them.

Taking Care of Bid-ness: No-Reply Bloggers

A lot of you like to leave comments, and some of you have questions.  Thanks!  But, with this crazy busy life of mine, it is easier on me and my family if I can just hit “reply” from my inbox to answer you.  A lot of times- and I mean 90% of the time- when I hit “reply”, the e-mail address is:

“no-reply-blogger@blogger.com”

I’m pretty sure that’s not you.  And as much as I would love to, I just don’t have time in my day to hunt down e-mail addresses or blogs or whatnot.

So, it isn’t that I don’t appreciate your comments, I just can’t reply back to you!  This is a real bummer when it comes to giveaway time, and a winner has no contact info.  I simply pick another name instead.

Do you know if you are a no-reply blogger?  Find out!

On your blogger dashboard, you’ll see your name on the top right with a little arrow next to it:

account name

Click on that arrow, and some info will pop up about you.  Your e-mail, blogger profile, and account settings:

blogger profile

If you click on Blogger Profile, you will have a chance to EDIT your profile.  If your e-mail is not a hyperlink, you should probably edit it.

e-mail available

When you edit your profile, you want to make sure your “Show my email address” box is checked.  You will also see a place to enter your email address.

  Share E-mail

So, what if you don’t want everyone to see your e-mail address?  Create a new e-mail just for these blog comment/giveaway purposes!  Easy peasy.  Just remember to check it often if you ask questions or enter giveaways.

If your “show my email address” is checked, and you have an e-mail address entered into the e-mail space, I can answer you no problem! YAY!

If you don’t have a blog, you can always create a dummy blog.  Blogger is free, and you don’t have to post anything if you don’t want to :)  I know people who have done this to make things easier.

I know some of you probably want to keep things the same and don’t want anyone to access your information.  That’s fine!  But if you want me to answer a question for you, click on “Contact me” up top and send me an ‘ol fashioned e-mail so I can help you out.

Does that help some of you?  I hope so!  There are some days where I am too busy to respond to everyone and everything, but I try my best.  Love you guys!

Easter Garland

First, if your name is Eva MarĂa, you might want to check your sneekpeeq account and enjoy that $25 gift certificate!  Congrats!

Garland full

All right, so I’ve been busy this week being a mom- taking kids to the park, cleaning up, doing mountains of laundry, etc., so not much has been done on the sewing/crafty front.  Although, with my oldest daughter’s persistence, we did manage to put up a new Easter decoration.  Ok, the only decoration so far… I’m way behind.  Valentine’s Day stuff is still out.

Eggs and Bunny garland

Because I was hurrying around trying to get dishes done so we could have something to eat on, I put my Silhouette to work while I did my own chores.  While bunnies and eggs wouldn’t stretch my scissor abilities, it was nice to get two things done at once.  And these eggs were kind of cute!  After everything was cut out, I got out the crayons, stickers, and ribbon for the girls to decorate the paper images with.

It turned out pretty cute, and we had a lot of fun doing it together.  They are so proud of their work :)  And I’m glad I was finally able to vacuum.

Oh, and one more thing- if you are in the East Valley, the tickets to my next choir concert are selling fast!

evmco-ctb

I am being stretched beyond my musical abilities for this concert… I have words to say to Beethoven if I meet him in the next life.  You are all going to LOVE it though.  And I would love the support! :)

Find tickets at www.mesaartscenter.com.

Let’s Go Fly A Kite

My kids are obsessed with Mary Poppins.  Well, I guess we all are!  After watching it for the 2,352nd time lately, the idea of a quilt with kites on it popped into my head.  Let’s Go Fly A Kite, and send it soaring!

Fly a Kite Quilt

Just a few days later, I saw that Riley Blake had a new fabric line called “Fly A Kite” (designed by October Afternoon) and I was so excited!  As soon as my LQS, ETC, got it in I raced down and grabbed some fat quarters and yardage. Spring time is approaching, and kite-flying days are coming soon!

Fly A Kite Bright

I arranged the kites (which are made up of half-square triangles and half-rectangle blocks) in staggered rows, which was Mike’s idea.

Fly A Kite in a Row

This fabric line is sooo playful.  Little girls on swings, boys flying kites, flowers, geometrics, stripes… and the colors are beautiful.  They play more into the shabby look, I think, since the whites are more creamy and the colors a little more subdued.

Fly A Kite

And of course, you can’t leave a blue sky full of kites without a cute red binding, can you??

Fly A Kite Back

The back is just a print of little kids at play.  There’s a little dog in there, too!  I pieced the back to get it all to fit!

The quilt is a good throw size, and measures at 56”x64”.

I hope this quilt does the fabric justice.  I had a difficult time getting a perfect picture, but I’m loving how it turned out.

This one is not staying here to keep us warm. I’m hoping it finds a good home, and I’m putting it in my Etsy shop.  It will be lonely in there, since it is the only thing in there…

Guest Posting Today at Sewing in No Man’s Land

Pleated Chevrons Title

Well, it was about time that I squeezed some sewing in for me.  I got two skirts and half a dress sewn this past week, and I’m excited to wear everything (well, not the half-dress… gotta finish that first!) soon.  One of the easiest “for me” projects out there is a skirt- hence the two skirts I’ve made lately.  And I’ve got an awesome new skirt with tutorial to share at Sewing in No Man’s Land today!

Skirty Skirt Skirt

Pretty Pleated Skirt

I have been working on projects for me lately, and this was a “practice” skirt… which turned out quite beautifully, except for the fact it sits lower on the hips than I wanted.  My sister-in-law was looking so pretty with her wavy hair that I grabbed her, threw the skirt at her, and made her come outside to pose for me.  She’s such a good sport!

Pretty in Pleats

This skirt has four pleats in front, and four pleats in back.  The front pleats are all centered around that pretty damask- the back wasn’t so lucky and is slightly off.  But oh well! The fabric is actually from a Christmas line, I just can’t remember which now.

Laughy

It takes a strong woman to pose for me while her brothers, dad, mom, and grandma are all throwing suggestions and silly comments her way.  I think it was the most hilarious 2 minutes of our day!

Tutorial for a different pleated skirt coming tomorrow!

At The Office

Whew! I’ve been gone all week.  Well, I’ve been here at home, but every time I’d think about writing a blog post I’d get caught up in something else and it was just another quiet day at the crafty cupboard.  You know how it is.

Especially when that something else is this cute, right???

Happiest Baby

oh baby

Or this much trouble.

Diva

Or this much help.

Cookies mmmmm

In the late evening, I get to work.

New Quilt

I have one quilt all done except for binding, and another one in small block form.

QS Stack

I also got fabric to make myself a dress.  It is time this momma has new clothes.  I’ve also been working on a non-sewing project, but came to a halt when it came to my attention that using orbital sanders on the patio is against HOA rules.  LAME.

How was your week?  Productive?

Win Some, Lose Some Wallet

Wall Exterior

I finally caved in and bought a big purse.  Mine old one is really small, which I LOVE, but it was getting hard for me to stuff diapers, wipes, and a change of little clothes for a very spit-uppy baby.  Don’t you know I’m also anti diaper bag?  True story.  I don’t think my kids know they can have snacks and toys and anything like that once we leave the house like other kids :)

The problem is, my old purse had a wallet built into it, so I never needed one.  Now… I found myself with a handful of cards that I didn’t want floating around in that big, bottomless bag (for the record, it isn’t THAT big… just bigger). I also wanted something that just fit my needs, that’s all.  A couple card slots, a bill pocket, and… that’s it.

After realizing my dilemma, I sat at the sewing machine and ironing board and starting working on a wallet.  I wanted to use a super stiff interfacing (Peltex by Pellon) so the wallet wouldn’t be flimsy.  When I ironed my fabric to one side, my other piece of fabric was inadvertently ironed to the other side.  Oops.  I guess the Pellon was double-sided iron-on.  And it wasn’t budging. DOH!

Strong Wallet

So, suddenly my intention of putting in a flap closure, turning everything right side out and doing a pretty top-stitch was out.  And it was getting late.  To make the wallet still usable, I just slapped on some binding and some pathetic sew-on snaps and called it a night (or, early morning, ha ha).  I’ll get around to making exactly what I had in mind some other day.  I win some, I lose some.  This wasn’t that bad of a loss at all, but I would rather LOVE what I made, ya know?

Bill Holder

I was hoping to avoid the “homemade” look, which this definitely is, but it holds the cards and cash (the $2 was the only bill near me when I was taking these pictures, ha ha! The only other option was foreign currency) perfectly well.

Wallet Interior

I think that the next time I jump into this type of Pellon project, I’ll first go to Sara for advice.  She’s the master at this stuff.

Here’s to OOPS projects!

(And did you know, Arizona Drivers Licenses expire after 60 years or something long like that. I’ve got until 2050 with a really terrible, no make-up, post-partum photo where my shirt is the same color as the backdrop.  SCORE! Because who wants to go wait in line forever for a better picture??)

(I use a lot of parenthetical statements)

I Spy With My Little Eye

First, thanks everyone for your comments lately.  I’m feeling great about who I am and what I do and I feel supported by every one of you- I’m glad I’m not the only one who has to beat down uncertainties every now and then!

I Spy a Chair

I had the opportunity to participate in an I-Spy Charm Swap this last month (Thanks to Kati of From The Blue Chair), and it was my first.  Let me tell ya, that is a great way to get a lot of spy-worthy fabric without buying everything yourself.  Loved it.

I had a little extra time one night (you know, between that 1am and 2 am hour) and did a frenzy of chain piecing to get these together.  I pulled eight more fabrics from my stash to get the quilt as big as I wanted it and added them to the charm mix.  The next night, I added borders, and then little by little I would quilt it with straight lines when I found a minute here and a minute there.  Last night I finally added the binding.  Lucky for me, I had the fabric for backing and binding sitting in my stash waiting to be used.

ISpy front and back

When my 2-year-old woke up last night with a soaking we bed, she needed some consoling (for the record, she refuses to wear diapers to bed anymore, and she’s having more accidents during the day too.  We are lose-lose around here).  I had just snipped the final threads from the quilt when she started crying, so we changed her and her bed (where a huge battle ensued and it took two adults to pull off soaking panties from a 2-year-old, and we nearly lost that battle!) and I sat with her and we played I-Spy with this quilt for a while.

She ended up in bed with us last night.  On my side of the bed. But I digress.

We played with it again this morning in actual daylight.  I spy…

a pink car

I Spy a Pink Car

a blender

… and a whole lot of other fun ones.  I guess people often make cards or lists to help play the game, but we were on a roll without any of that.  Cranky toddlers are cute to listen to…

“I thpy a capatiller”

“I thpy an octodots”

“I thpy a bana”

(and when she’d find one) “Ding!!”
