Every once in a while, this mama needs something for herself.
And when I saw this super pretty knit at Hobby Lobby the other day, I knew it was destined to be hanging in my closet somehow. They had a cream color too, but you all know I am a sucker for all things blue!
So the knit is a super lightweight knit, with varying rows of a stripe and lace layer. It sat on my table along with a million other half-finished projects (I am so easily distracted right now, it is embarrassing) until yesterday. I shoved everything off my table on wild impulse, went to my closet and grabbed a shirt that I really like how it fits, and started tracing right onto this blue stripe for my pattern. I just crossed my fingers that it fit! When it turned out, I traced the shirt again onto freezer paper to have a permanent pattern for it.
I cut the shirt shorter than the inspiration one so I could add a thick stretchy band on the bottom. And, so I didn’t have to hem the sleeves or neckline, I added bands on the arms too and a thin collar around the neckline. It took a few hours, but I was so happy with the finished product that I squealed, out loud, with delight. I called my husband to come home right away to see but… I guess his MBA classes were more important? (psshhht. Whatever.)
As soon as he came home I threw my camera at him and ran outside, hoping to get a few photos in before he took off one way and I left in another. Hence the totally awkward photos. I should remember not to inform him he is picking up from piano lessons while he is snapping pictures…
Have you made anything for yourself lately? You should. It is quite satisfying :)

SO cute!! Tutorial??? ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love sewing for myself... maybe because it's a lot harder to find clothing that fits me well for a good price and that I actually like than it is to find cute things for my daughters.
ReplyDeleteI love that fabric... I may have to see if my Hobby Lobby has any. =)
I seriously love it! It's perfect and you are so talented! I could never sew something like that! I want to buy 5 of them!!!
ReplyDeleteI love it! My goal is to make myself some knit tops this spring/summer and something like this would be perfect. How wide did you make the band on the bottom?
ReplyDeleteSo cute! Good for you! I always mean to make things for myself...but mostly I end up with piles of fabric and patterns...but no clothes! You are inspirational!
ReplyDeleteTurned out so cute and love it with the red pants!
ReplyDeletesoo cute! I love that fabric :)
ReplyDeleteThat fabric is super pretty. I love how it turned out. And no, I don't make things much for me right now...actually right now I don't make much at all. I've got a busy 10 month old on the run, and so I am too. :) Someday during nap time I'll manage to get to something creative...someday. ;)
ReplyDeleteSeriously, so cute. I love the red pants with it! You are rockin' it Mel. Go bold!!
ReplyDeleteso cute! I LOVE the fabric... I've been wanting some thin material to make a shirt for myself... I always think the stores only have thick stuff... will have to check Hobby Lobby! I came over from Sugar Bee Crafts. Would love for you to share this at my Tuesday Link party as well! http://www.nap-timecreations.com/2013/03/st-pattys-pasta-and-tasteful-tuesday.html
ReplyDeleteThis turned out so cute! I may have to try some shirts for myself!

Love it! Found you at Project Sewn :) I made a similar top for myself, but out of a heavier cotton interlock. I love yours with the lightweight fabric--looks like I'll just have to make another! It looks refreshingly cool for the warm weather that's coming. I love the banded short sleeves :)
